Swim Meet 101
In preparation for a Swim Meet, you want to have on hand:
1. A Sharpie! This one surprised me at our first swim meet - but you need it to write your kid's Event, Heat, and Lane on their arm or leg. This gives them easy access to what races they are in. It will also help our Parent Volunteers who are charged with the responsibility of getting the kiddos to starting blocks. It is also helpful to write their names on their backs. This information will be in Heat Sheet. If you have multiple Sharpies, pack them, loads of kiddos need help.
2. SUNSCREEN - let's keep all the kiddos safe in the sun!
3. VOLUNTEER SPIRIT - we always need help with lots of jobs. We always need timers, which is a super easy job. Without enough timers we can't get the Meet started. My ideal swim meet is one where we have enough timers that we can switch out halfway! This gives everyone a chance to watch. Older siblings and Grandparents are welcome to help out!
4. REMEMBER - Bring a swim bag with goggles, swim cap, towels, sun hat, water, and snacks or money for concession (small bills preferred)!
Other helpful tips:
- Review heat sheets the night before & don't forget to label the swimmer's right arm with events in a Sharpie pen. (Tips: Write on your swimmer AFTER you apply sunscreen. After the meet, use alcohol wipes to remove Sharpie ink.)
- If you are running late or not able to attend, please notify the coach as soon as possible.
- Check-in with the coach when you arrive.
- Follow the facility’s rules at all times.
- Stay with your age group during the Meet. If you must leave your group, let the age group parent know where you are going and remember to return as quickly as possible.
- Keep pool area neat and clean of trash. Use trash and recycle bins to dispose of waste.
- When you have finished all of your events, tell your coach BEFORE you leave with your parents.
